About Weilbachs Kunstnerleksikon

Weilbach. Dansk Kunstnerleksikon (Weilbach's Danish lexicon of artists) is a reference work rich in tradition. The 4th edition contains information on almost 8,000 Danish artists and architects, as well as foreign artists with links to Denmark.

The most recent edition of Weilbachs Kunstnerleksikon came out in printed form in 1994-2000. This website provides access to the digital version of this publication. Due to copyright reasons, the digital version of the lexicon will not be updated, which means the information in the digital version dates back to when the printed edition of the work was finalised in 1994.

Who are included?

Visual artists and architects from the middle ages to the contemporary are included. A key criterion for inclusion in the lexicon is that the artist is, or has been active in Denmark or in existing or former Danish territories. Furthermore, the artist must be or have been active on the Danish art scene.

Weilbach's archive

The background material for Weilbachs Kunstnerleksikon comprises large quantities of data and records on Danish artists and architects collated in Weilbach?s archive. The oldest material in this archive dates back to the librarian Philip Weilbach?s work on completion of the first edition of his lexicon, which came out in 1877-1878. Weilbach?s archive is a part of Denmark's national art library and is open to the public.
