100 posts needed to create threads
We finally did it, we really did it, and we didn't even damage the statue.

Members cannot create threads in Marketplace (and therefore sell things) until they have at least 100 posts, and have been registered at least 30 days. Lower thresholds apply for longer-term members.

Who can do what?
  • Guests/Not Logged In - can view forum, read threads.
  • Regular members - can view forum, read threads, post replies.
  • Members with 100+ posts, 30+ days - full access to Marketplace.
  • Members with 75+ posts, 1+ year - full access to Marketplace.
  • Members with 50+ posts, 2+ years - full access to Marketplace.
  • Members with 25+ posts, 3+ years - full access to Marketplace.

How is the limit handled?
  • The board hands out the privilege hourly. This means that ...
  • Once you hit the limit, it may be up to 60 minutes before you can create Marketplace threads.
  • The board doesn't promote members who already qualify until they come online. In other words, if you haven't been on the boards since this was turned on, it may be up to 60 minutes after your next (logged-in) visit before you can create Marketplace threads.

Will this stop the scammers?

Doubtful. But at least there will be a post history to research before buying from a seller. And much of the incentive for a quick scam will be gone - they'll have to invest a lot of time & effort before selling you the imitation H&K 20mm Neighborhood Dominator.

Edited Sept 19, 2008 to add 100-75-50-25 variation for long-term members.

Ω Jul 4, 2008 02:30 AM
How long does it take for the average person to get to 100 posts?

This also makes a mockery of quality not quantity in regards to posting....

NateB Jul 4, 2008 02:47 AM
I think it's a great idea. It will probably prevent a lot of people from scamming many members of this forum. I don't think it will get rid of scammers 100%, but it's still worth the effort to put this into effect.
Good going, reader50!

So how do we go about finding our post counts? I've been a member for a while, but never really posted since I've always been able to find my answers through searching.

You can see your post count by visiting your public profile page. In this case, here: http://forums.macnn.com/members/migel628/

So, I'm more of a forum reader (read it almost daily) but don't post much because there are many more smarter people than I to answer questions. I have my website with phone number linked in my profile and have been a member since I don't know when. I have to go around and either ask a lot of questions which answers could be found via a search or something like "thanks for this post/thread - it's helped me a lot" to get my post count up so i can offer a good deal to members before going to ebay.

Admins/mods please don't take this as disrespect. I respect the fact that you're taking steps to help the members. I only want to help by raising questions.

Maybe member longevity could play a role as well as information provided in our profiles? Again, just questions that may or may not be practical or feasible.

Good question. I can see that you have 27 posts by looking at your profile. I looked for a "view my profile" in my user cp but couldn't find anything of the sort. Maybe they'll put your post count where you can see your own. So get out there and ask some questions and solve some problems in the MacNN community, there Tiger. :D

Edit: I see our question was answered. The only way I could find my public profile was clicking on my name next to a post.

Go to the quick links button on the forum page toolbar (at the top of each web page, along with log out, user cp, faq, calendar, new posts, etc. Click quick links and choose 'your profile'.

I continue to be amazed at the lack of recommendations for a rating system like Heatware or Beerology. Post counts and the amount of time registered are worthless indicators of a person's honesty. The same over at MR, which has gutted their marketplace forum.

In dealing with people for "references" they cite past threads with people that are impossible to get in touch with and require a fair amount of research to verify. With Heatware, it's all there, on the same page. This "change" is pointless and does nothing but reduce the total availability of items on this site.

imitchellg5 Jul 4, 2008 11:08 AM
Actually, if you read the forum rules, Heatware is recommended. Thanks reader50 for doing this. It was a long time coming, but hopefully it will keep the Marketplace a little safer.

audvidsvs Jul 4, 2008 11:14 AM
I like it.
It may not be everything but it sure is something.
What possible harm can come from promoting more activity here?
If someone just posts to be counted I suspect that will be quickly spotted by those looking at them to deal with.
I know I research anyone I do not know before sending money and often before even responding to any message.

Thanks
Ed

Thanks for the feedback. I think that the minimum post count does take member longevity into account in that someone like you who has been a member for a while and posts very little has already surpassed the 100 post count requirement. ;) (You're at 152 last I checked)

I think this is a great idea. Now, if people can moderate threads at 10k posts ...

Also, will new posters get a notice of this?

sledsbehave Jul 4, 2008 06:21 PM
this should help.

PowerBub Jul 5, 2008 02:48 PM
good idea. i don't post much but looked at my profile and see i have 216 posts, so the 100 limit seems reasonable.

I was wondering about the relevance of 19k posts as you were not even close....

In general, a great idea.

I would suggest one change to this: either grandfather in members that registered before today, or make the rule something like

100 posts and registered for 30 days OR registered for 2 years + 25 posts.

This would make it easier for older "lurking" members to participate.

It is technically possible to have multiple paths to thread creation privs. We set it at 100 because that's what has usually been requested in the past.

100 posts is two pages of search results - that's a good number to get a feel for someone's personality. When we recently added new Moderators, that was one of the things I checked on every candidate.

This is a Marketplace rule, so the details are up to your friendly local moderators. If consensus develops for alternate paths to the privilege, they can ask and I'll set it up. Or you could try offering them obscene quantities of money.

lol. trying to qualify by posting in the marketplace seems a bit counter intuitive, but heck, whatever works :)

Thanks for the update and implementing the minimum post count. Everyone agrees it isn't perfect, but it will make a difference and no solution will be perfect.

Now it is time to go shopping in the new and improved marketplace.

OMG, that amazing.

Do you set yourself a budget, like no more than 4 posts per year ? ;)
Do you splurge with an extra post in leap years ?

But I guess I have posted a bit more rapidly!

Be like turtle. Post on any subject.

And sign your posts just in case people can''t see the left-hand side of the screen.

As posted above, check the forum rules. We've tried pushing for it, but getting users to actually start using Heatware (Beer is Ars only) is difficult.

Awe man, I'm on the good seller list too, but just shy of 100. Guess I better start joining in discussions more!

Hi Mods,
I have more than 100 post count and have been a member here for years. How come I do not have access to post in the marketplace?
Thanks, Paul

reader50 Jul 17, 2008 03:37 PM
You have that priv when I checked just now. Note the details in the first post.

You probably hadn't logged into the forums since it was set up. Once you do, the board awards the privilege within 60 minutes.

Tenacious Dyl Jul 24, 2008 02:09 AM
I've been a member here since 2003, and only 47 posts (this is 48?) I've also done a few good trades through this marketplace (one over $2,000 worth) all successful and with no problems. I don't chat up the forums a lot, but I like the community and generally trust people here.

I wanted to post a WTB in the Market Place but now I can't... do I really have to just spam random posts for a few weeks before I can make a posting? Thanks.

Ω Jul 24, 2008 03:12 AM
This is why I think the rule is flawed. Why punish long term members who don't post often? Incorporate a time rule as well as the scammer is not likely to wait 6 months to put their evil plan into effect.

Randman Jul 24, 2008 03:34 AM
10 posts off for every year of membership?

Ω Jul 24, 2008 10:27 AM
A stepped version I think would be ideal.

Amen! This is exactly what I'd like to see. I'm a lurker but find answer to my questions by searching. Now, it's like I'm being penalized for not asking questions that can be found with the search feature. :( I don't want to sell a lot of anything but I liked being able to post something up for sale once in a while if I need to.

I would LOVE to see an amended rule to grandfather in those of us who have been long-time lurkers. :)

My mistake, I had 47 private messages...I thought something was wrong. I couldn't post because of the 60 minute waiting problem, not my post count. Successfully posted my thread now.

Still, for the users that don't post frequently, but have been here a while... I dunno.

acorder Jul 24, 2008 10:42 PM
I, like many others, have been here for a while, but generally use the search feature to find answers to questions. But I'm going to complain even more because I did something stupid. Namely, I didn't write down the password for my old MacNN account (marcuscorder) that I started in 2005-ish. I'm pretty sure I had a decent number of posts with that account before I changed addresses and didn't use it for a couple of months because of all the mayhem. I tried all of the various passwords I thought it could be, but still nothing. E-mails to administrators received no responses. So, I had to start a new account (acorder). And I don't have near enough posts yet. Not that I use the marketplace a lot, mind you, but it's come in handy three or four times in the past.

Cheers.

If that was directed at me I sure would like to know how I was redundant.

I have been online since the mid-80's and learned to be -very- careful about my posting: not 'wasting bandwidth' in forums. So I made my point: my good citizenship cost me posting rights.

Apologies to all. Not like I had anything to sell anyhow ;).

It was simply congratulating you on getting one step closer to your goal and not a comment on your post. Now with your reply you're one step closer (another +1 to the cause), and if you reply to this to clear up the misunderstanding then you will have another +1.

This thread could turn out to be a nice little "earner" for you! :D

Gushing praise for the MacNN folks, especially reader50. Problems arising from my own stupidity are being fixed by someone else, and I greatly appreciate it. Here's to the people pushing buttons and flipping switches behind the scenes (and to higher post counts for all)!

Cheers!
